Célia Foussé is an artist based in Paris, France, working primarily in photography, social media, and graphic design. Her latest oeuvre is titled “Parenthesis.” The black and white photography print "Above Salt," 2018, is a product from that collection, which delves into the unconscious mind during sleep. The average person spends about 26 years of their life in sleep. Sigmund Freud once said, “The interpretation of dreams is the royal road to a knowledge of the unconscious activities of the mind.”
In "Parenthesis," which connotes a break in our daily life, the artist uses black and white photography to depict the unreality of our dreams during deep and paradoxical sleep. This work is coupled with a surreal combination of imagery, words, and poems recited by her friends, who are reputable French artists, singers, and writers. The layout of the photos also reflects the hypnogram that explains the sleep cycle. Through this collection, Foussé provides a visual and auditory exploration of the dream world, inviting viewers to reflect on their own subconscious experiences.
